About MailDefender®

Technology

According to a US Postal Service report delivered to Congress, there remains a serious cause for concern regarding the use of the mail-stream mechanism as a vehicle for bioterrorism. TSSI believes the MailDefender® product to be the first commercially available system that addresses this need. The MailDefender® is highly effective, simple to operate and designed to easily integrate into your present mailroom operations.

The efficacy of the MailDefender® has been independently verified by several federally accredited laboratories. Based on findings, MailDefender® annihilates anthrax and other harmful pathogens, surpassing specifications prescribed by the US Government without harming or further contaminating the mail.

The MailDefender® system focuses multiple energy sources including electromagnetic irradiation, ultraviolet, broadband and infrared light sources and an antimicrobial solution to destroy biological pathogens and neutralize chemical toxins. While the specifics of the process are proprietary information, the following describes the TSSI disinfection methodology:
  • A microwave source is used to deliver energy deep into the mail causing the water molecules to violently vibrate, damaging pathogenic DNA.
  • An intense ultraviolet source kills surface contamination and helps maintain a sterile environment in the decontamination chamber.
  • A broadband light source is used to produce ozone and intense white light to assist in breaking down the pathogens.
  • Infra-red energy is used to accelerate the disinfection process.
  • Constant motion ensures even distribution of the combined energies.
  • An antimicrobial solution is atomized into the chamber at regular intervals helping to ensure effective sanitization.
A proprietary algorithm effectively coordinates and controls the energies throughout the cycle allowing the entire process to be run at temperatures much lower than those reached during irradiation, providing the key to undamaged mail.

FAQ

How much mail can the MailDefender decontaminate?
The MailDefender can process approximately 3 lbs (100-120 pieces) of mail per cycle. A cycle takes just 45 minutes to complete.

How can you process more mail?
The internal dynamics of the machine perform optimally in the current size configuration. When you get away from a batch processing methodology to a flow-through tunnel approach for example, it becomes necessary to employ higher energy levels and greater power requirements, which increase safety concerns for the end user. The MailDefender system is designed to scale to meet your mail capacity needs through its modular configuration.

Does it use nuclear radiation?
No, the MailDefender system synergizes several proven technologies to eradicate deadly substances in the mail.

How do you know if there is something harmfull in your mail?
Due to the limits of present detection technologies, the chance of false positives and negatives have not allowed a reliable enough method of detection for us to incorporate into our system. We feel the safest philosophy is to just kill everything. Physical evidence will remain for investigation by the proper authorities.

How do you know you have killed anything?
The proprietary algorithm synergizes multiple proven technologies to kill deadly pathogens in the decontamination chamber. The efficacy has been validated by the Steven's Institute of Technology and other federally accredited labs to surpass annihilation standards set forth by the US government.

Is anthrax still a concern?
It's true that there has not been an anthrax attack publicly reported for some time; however, the threat of bioterrorism has presented itself through the mail on a regular basis since October of 2001. Also, there are many other harmful substances besides anthracis bacillus that have the potential to cause mass disruption. Many of these such as Ricin have been in the news much more recently. National Security Experts believe that the proliferation of weapons grade anthrax from the former Soviet Union to rogue states such as Iran, Cuba, North Korea, and several other potentially dangerous factions may have occurred during and after the breakup of the former Soviet Union. There are still many reasons for concern.

Is the threat of biological contaminanation through the mail as ominous as it is portrayed?
Actually we see only the tip of the iceberg. Hundreds of these bio-chemical attacks take place each month and are reported from across the nation, causing evacuations of thousands of employees and costing millions of dollars in lost productivity. Related costs can be prohibitive even for a large company.

What can the MailDefender kill?
In addition to anthrax the MailDefender is effective against many deadly pathogens such as Botulism, Ebola, E. coli, Tuberculosis, Avian Flu, Hantavirus, Plague, Smallpox as well as bio-chemical agents like Ricin, and a long list of others. Basically, being naturally in the spore form, (think of a popcorn seed) anthrax is one of the hardest known bio-agents to kill, if you can eradicate it, most everything else would be annihilated as well.

What about maintenance?
We offer multiple levels of support. Cartridges, Filters and Process Control Solution are serviced by our authorized field technicians as part of all our maintenance package offerings. Our Diamond package includes a 24 hour response time, and an upgrade of the firmware to address future strains of viruses or bacteria.

Are there other applications for this technology?
Yes, our technology is based on a portable platform that will easily plug into parallel industries such as currency, document and food decontamination, as well as a cost effective method of medical waste disposal.

What about training?
A simple half-day training session will have your safe mail operations up and running in no time, it's really that easy to use.

How does the MailDefender integrate into our present mail-room operations?
The system is designed to be installed into a wall separating the untreated mail delivery from your mail operations center. Its 2-door configuration also enables the MailDefender to act as a portable free-standing unit.
